Grouting

I grouted 5 mosaics tonight. It has been a while since I've had my hands dirty. Unusual for me, a couple of these are yet to be named. Usually I come up with the name while I'm building the mosaic. I'm especially happy to get the piece with the face grouted, which I think turned out great. I'm also partial to the one titled "Easier said, then done". Below are the poorly-lit photos of the just-grouted pieces. They are still pretty dir

The story of the one with the smiley face

One of my favorite glass discoveries is this grinning face. I think it was a doodle in a puddle of molten glass. For a while it adorned my shop light in a precarious manner. The other  day a good bump sent it to the floor to crash in pieces. I was sad to see it break, but it meant I could finally put it in a mosaic. The working title was "In memory of a lamp I loved", but I think I'm going to call it "Hats Off" instead. I still have to grout it- more pics to follow.

The probable cause for my lack of ambition
I just finished a commissioned piece for a woman who worked at my elementary school- I remember seeing her in the office when I was young. She contacted me about the piece on the right, titled "The probable cause for my lack of ambition" after a Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground lyric. I no longer had that mosaic for sale, but still had some of the same glass I used before.

Fluxometer - 20" x 15"
I don't design my mosaics ahead of time- the form comes together as I glue glass to the board. I can't replicate a previous design, so I just have to hope that the new one is well-received.

I call this "Fluxometer" - a tool for measuring change.

Fortunatic - 13" x 10"
"Fortunatic" is a gift for an old friend- it's good to make them with a person in mind. Now to get it in the mail...

Context Independent - 6" x 12.5"
Taking photos today. I try to keep records on all the mosaics I make, along with photos. Since 2007 I've made over 200 mosaics. My early record-keeping wasn't very good, and I lack good pictures of many earlier pieces.

Three Friends Coffee House

This Sunday I'll be hanging a couple dozen mosaics at Three Friends Coffee House. I'm excited to be doing a show there in January- it's a funky neighborhood spot I walk by every day on my way to work. I hear I get free coffee as long as my art is on the wall, so I'll be a frequent visitor in January. Come join me January 5 for an opening reception!

Staid Tune, on the bench
This piece is a commission for some friends in St. Louis. They wanted a piece to go over the cabinets in their new kitchen.
